Zeilenmakerspad 5

Private home adjoining cheese farm ‘De Catharina Hoeve’…

The residence at Zeilenmakerspad 5 is a replica of a home that belonged with an Oostzaan cheese farm, and is now part of ‘De Catharina Hoeve’. Albert Heijn (the grandson of the supermarket company founder) donated the residence and cheese farm in 1987 to mark the centennial of Royal Ahold NV. That same year, Queen Beatrix also bestowed the ‘Royal’ designation upon Ahold, which by then had grown to become a multinational corporation with numerous global enterprises and retail chains. The Albert Heijn story started in 1887 with the opening of the very first shop. This shop is now also located in the Zaanse Schans. The design is by Cornelis de Jong, an expert in Zaan-style timber construction, who has realized many projects in the Zaanse Schans.
